Commemoration of Sherry Buford
RESOLUTION OF COMMEMORATION
WHEREAS, Sherry Dianne Buford began teaching 6th grade mathematics at Oxford School District in 2005 at Central Elementary School. Prior to her service as an educator, she was a Teacher’s Assistant for the Even Start literacy program from 1993-1996 and served as a bus driver in Oxford School District in 2002-2003. Ms. Buford was 46 years old and a Lafayette County native. Ms. Buford was a graduate of Lafayette County High School. She possessed a bachelor’s and master’s degree from The University of Mississippi. She was highly esteemed by family, colleagues, friends, and most importantly, her students; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Buford’s students loved her and knew that she cared about, not only their success in the classroom, but also their success as a person. She was known for giving students a genuine tough love. She was quick to give hugs and high fives, but also quick to correct her students if they did not meet her high expectations. She wanted everyone to give their all, and pushed them to be better each day. Many students referred to Ms. Buford as their “mom away from home”; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Buford’s influence as a teacher extended far beyond the classroom. Ms. Buford was a leader among teachers at Oxford Intermediate School but didn’t care for titles. She was passionate about her job and extremely hard-working. Her joy and larger-than-life personality was contagious and she made everyone feel special. She was loud and funny, and her faith inspired us all; and
WHEREAS, the “Sherry Buford Memorial Scholarship” has been established by her colleagues to honor her work and life. The scholarship, managed by the CREATE Foundation, will provide funds to students from Oxford High School and Lafayette County High School to pursue a higher education; and
WHEREAS, our beloved Sherry Dianne Buford was called from this life to another, we wish to honor her memory and humbly recognize her contributions to our students and faculty. Her loving presence will be missed.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Oxford School District Board of Trustees:
That a copy of this resolution be kept on file in the superintendent’s office and that a copy be presented to the family of Sherry Dianne Buford as a symbol of highest regard and deep appreciation that this Board expresses for her service to Oxford School District.
