2016-2017 Academic Challenge Champions

RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, each year, the Oxford School District has a competition between athletic teams that rewards the athletic team with the highest overall grade-point average (GPA) and the athletic team with the highest overall academic growth; and

WHEREAS, research shows a correlation between student involvement in extracurricular activities and student achievement, and recent studies suggest that participation in high school sports was positively related with higher grades, higher graduation rates, and higher scores on standardized assessments for student-athletes when compared to non-athletes; and

WHEREAS, the benefits for a student-athlete involved in team sports within the Oxford School District include higher classroom grades, higher school attendance rate, lower school dropout rate, higher graduation rate, fewer discipline problems, superior standardized test scores, stronger leadership skills, character development, work ethic and ambition, reliability, determination, teamwork, citizenship; and

WHEREAS, Oxford Charger student-athletes won nine state championship titles in 2016 — the highest number in the state of Mississippi earned by any public high school — and have earned the Clarion-Ledger All-Sports Award on numerous occasions, and were named the number one Medium-Sized School and the No. 7 overall national ranking in 2016-2017 MaxPreps Cup standings; and

WHEREAS, student-athletes continue to shine in the classroom and perform as firstclass student-athletes in their respective sports individually and as a team; and

THEREFORE, LET IT BE RESOLVED that the Oxford High School Girls Cross Country team and Oxford High School Boys Basketball team are recognized as the 2016-2017 Academic Challenge Champions with the Oxford High School Girls Cross Country team earning the highest overall gradepoint average (GPA) of 3.77 and the Oxford High School Boys Basketball team showing the highest overall academic growth from 3.35 to 3.49.
