Employee of the Year 2018: OSD & OHS
John Davenport
Theatre Director
Oxford High School
“I am humbled, surprised, and honored to receive this recognition. I know how privileged I am to work in such a supportive, encouraging environment, and I thank my peers across the district for acknowledging my efforts. To be recognized as a member of this incredible group of professionals is beyond gratifying and serves as justification for all the hard work that goes into making the arts successful in the public school setting.”
The Oxford School District (OSD) is proud to recognize Oxford High School (OHS) teacher John Davenport as our OSD and OHS Employee of the Year for 2018. Mr. Davenport helps make our district a great place to work and learn.
Here’s what OSD had to say about Mr. Davenport:
“He goes above and beyond for this school district. He works so hard to put on such amazing productions. He directs our kids in award-winning shows, locally, state-wide and even internationally! And his kids WORK for him because they LOVE him!”
“John has touched more lives while in his district than any of us. His work is the best in the state along with rivaling others around the world.”
“I had the pleasure to participate in Mr. Davenport’s 101st production, 1776, with students and fellow faculty members. It was an amazing experience because of his vision, organization, and enthusiasm for his passion — theater. He had roses for his all-female cast the first night, and you could tell that he appreciated all our hard work just as we appreciated his.”
“John Davenport is so talented and works tirelessly with his students to produce fabulous shows, year after year. He brings out the best in his students, and our district is so lucky to have him as a Theater teacher.”
“He is a remarkable mentor and leader for all his students, and he makes effective, important, thought-provoking theater happen not only for our school, but for the entire Oxford community. He fosters student-centered learning and responsibility for every student who works with him.”
“Mr. Davenport continues to create and inspire our students in a way that is unparalleled. He is such a gift to our district and absolutely deserves this honor!”
“John has taken this drama program to new heights. It’s a program that has obtained international recognition. He is making a lifelong impact on many students. We are honored to have an employee like John Davenport working in the Oxford School District.”
“Davenport has continued to provide an exceptional product on stage and in the classroom. The theatre department is by far the best I have seen in the three states in which I have taught. For going above and beyond anything this school district could ask or think and having reached the 100th show, I have no hesitation that John Davenport deserves to be honored as the 2018 Employee of the Year!”
“John is one of the best colleagues with whom to work — witty, professional, compassionate, and talented!”
“Mr. Davenport provides a unique experience to our students in Oxford. The exposure to the arts and acting expands their talents to lead into lifelong careers and experiences. He is a gift to the district and continues to put Oxford on the map globally for theater.”
“John Davenport goes beyond what his job performance requires. His teaching abilities, skills, expectations for students, and the number of performances staged each year are far beyond what other high schools produce in the nation. John expects nothing but excellence, and has a gift to pull the best qualities out of students who had no knowledge of their capabilities. He builds character, self-esteem, strong work ethic, taking ownership of failures and successes, and challenges his students academically in a way that is phenomenal and a pleasure to witness. He puts in numerous work hours that really take away from his personal life. The OSD and the Oxford community respect his work and accomplishments.”
“Mr. Davenport has represented Oxford School District consistently for years, using his talents, patience, and mentorship to inspire, motivate and mold students into being creative, self-confident, responsible young adults. To be a part of his work, whether in the classroom or on the stage, is a chance to become a better person.”
