Enrollment in Accelerated Courses at All-Time High

Oxford, Mississippi (September 29, 2021) — In 2018-2019, the Oxford School District set out to increase the number of students at Oxford High who are enrolled in accelerated courses over the next five years. From that vision, the Department of College & Career Readiness (CCR) was created to oversee and support the Pathway Courses from grades 6-12 and align with the academic and career guidance students receive as they move through the Oxford School District.

Programs such as Honors & Advanced Placement (AP), Dual Credit, AVID, Career Technical Education (CTE), and Scholastic Institute are a part of the CCR department. Under the leadership of Dr. Steve Hurdle, accelerated course offerings have grown, and student enrollments have broken district records. 

Oxford High School has 2764 enrollments in accelerated courses — 74% of students are currently enrolled in at least one accelerated course. These class enrollment numbers represent 994 students. Enrollments for minority students in these courses are up 5% over the last 4 years.

There are 1078 total enrollments in the most rigorous academic courses offered such at Pre-AP, Honors, and AP. In May of 2021, Oxford High School had 67.9% of students scoring a 3 or higher on the National Advanced Placement exam, up from 61.7% the previous year. Oxford High had a 40% increase in dual credit enrollments at Northwest Community College and the University of Mississippi over the past 4 years. 

Programs such as CTE, ROTC leadership, and AVID have a total of 991 enrollments. In the 2020-2021 school year, the Oxford School District began operating its own CTE programs on the OHS campus. In the past, the district only offered shared courses and facilities with the Lafayette School District. While some courses are still shared with the county, the majority of CTE offerings happen on the campus of Oxford High School.  Since then, the district has had the greatest gain in CTE with nearly 35 times more students than the 4-year average. 

The district believes that every student deserves their own unique pathway to success and the CCR department and quality teachers are helping to create those pathways for students.
