Oxford School District Achievement Trending in Right Direction
Oxford, Mississippi (August 20, 2018) — The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) released this week the statewide results from the 2017-18 Mississippi Academic Assessment Program (MAAP), which shows achievement is continuing to rise among all student groups. MAAP assesses student performance in English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics in grades 3-8, English II and Algebra I. Oxford School District continues to rank in the MAAP Top 10 Performing Districts in the state.
- OSD average in English Language Arts is 58.3% overall proficiency
- Mississippi average in English Language Arts is 39.8% overall proficiency
- OSD average in Mathematics is 67.1% overall proficiency
- Mississippi average in Mathematics is 43.9% overall proficiency
MDE also released the 2018 Assessment Achievement Gap Analysis which reflected OSD’s dedication to its achievement gap, a yearly concern for teachers and administration. Superintendent Brian Harvey states “We are not satisfied with the remaining achievement gap, but the decline in our gap data demonstrates a strong commitment from our teachers and administrators to narrowing this gap more each and every year.”
Mississippi’s plan for improving student achievement calls for 70 percent of all students to be proficient in ELA and mathematics by 2025, but The Oxford School District calls for higher standards, sooner. At the back-to-school All Staff Meeting earlier this month, Superintendent Brian Harvey, announced Oxford School District’s 95 in Five plan to be achieved by year 2023. The goals include:
- 95% graduation rate
- 95% proficiency on state assessments
- 95th percentile in growth on student benchmark assessments
- 95% of seniors enrolled in AP (Advanced Placement), Dual-enrollment or CTE (Career and Technical Education) classes
- 95% of students who enroll in college are eligible to take credit bearing courses as freshmen.
