Free Meals for All Students in 2021-2022 School Year

All students eat free!

Oxford, Mississippi (July 19, 2021) —

The Oxford School District will be participating in the USDA’s National School Lunch Program “Seamless Summer Option (SSO)” for the duration of the 2021-2022 school year. This program, while typically only available during the summer months, will continue to extend free meals to all students during the 2021-2022 school year. According to the USDA, this option maintains the nutrition standards of the standard school meal programs – including a strong emphasis on providing fruits and vegetables, milk, whole grains and sensible calorie levels. These options also provide flexibility for schools to further customize their meal service design to fit their local needs.

“Families continue to face a financial strain, hunger, and hardship as a result of the pandemic. The USDA provided this waiver to allow our schools to reach more kids with the food they need. It’s one less thing that parents have to think about- they know their child will receive two nutritious meals and a snack every day at their school," Dan Westmoreland, Director of Child Nutrition.

ALL enrolled students in the Oxford School District will receive FREE breakfast and lunch during the 2021-2022 school year. The USDA has approved this extended benefit for ALL students, there are no required qualifications.

If meals are free, do I still need to complete the Free & Reduced Lunch application? Yes – the application is still required for:

  • Technology fee waivers in OSD
  • Federal funding in our schools
  • Fee waivers for college entrance tests
  • Fee waivers for college applications
