Update from the Superintendent on School Closings

Video Transcript

This afternoon, Governor Tate Reeves closed all schools in Mississippi for the remainder of the school year. In his press conference he acknowledged the hard work of teachers, students, parents, administrators, bus drivers, cafeteria workers and other staff associated with helping students. He also mentioned that although schools will be closed his expectation was that school districts would continue to provide distance learning opportunities to the extent that was possible to students in Mississippi. We are proud of the effort that our teachers have made to facilitate this transition and we are especially proud of the students who have continued their academic progress. Parents, thank you for your support and for your feedback on the recent survey about our online learning experience. I along with the curriculum and instruction department and principals have read each response. We will take this data and look for opportunities to improve in the near future.

The decision to close schools is not what any of our school staff wanted, but we realize that during this current crisis it is the best decision to ensure the safety of our students and their families, our employees, and our community. As you know the District is finalizing completion of the construction of a new elementary school and arts wing on the campus of Oxford High School. We are excited about opening these facilities in August. Teachers can now begin the process of packing their rooms to prepare for the move or for deep cleaning and sanitizing existing school facilities. We will be ready for our students in August!

Additionally, this decision will impact activities and events moving forward. Principals will communicate directly with you regarding events associated with each of the schools in the Oxford School District. We are evaluating the end of online instruction, summer learning opportunities, and the 2020 graduation ceremony. We will have guidance on all of these activities in the days to come. Information will be posted to our website at oxfordsd.org/covid19 and all of our district communication platforms.
