Quarantine Period Shortened

The Mississippi Department of Health (MSDH) has provided options to shorten the 14-day quarantine period after exposure to a COVID-19 infected individual based on symptom and/or testing strategies. In both alternatives, the post quarantine transmission risk is 12% or less.

Our focus remains on student and staff safety. Parents reserve the right to choose the 14-day quarantine period as recommended by MSDH.

Beginning Monday, December 14th, the following procedures will be in place:

  • Students who have been in isolation due to a positive test may return to school 10 days after the test date. Student quarantine can end after day 10 without testing and if no symptoms have been reported during daily monitoring at home.
  • If testing is available, then student quarantine can end after day 7 if an RT-PCR diagnostic specimen is negative and if no symptoms were reported during daily at-home monitoring. (Rapid testing is not accepted.)
  • The specimen may be collected and tested within 48 hours before the time of planned quarantine discontinuation, but quarantine cannot be discontinued earlier than after day 7. Quarantine cannot be discontinued based on a diagnostic specimen collected more than 48 hours before the time of planned quarantine discontinuation.

Essential employees may be allowed to work while under quarantine as previously outlined, but should adhere to the following for a full 14-day period:

  • Remain asymptomatic
  • Monitor temperature and symptoms daily
  • Required to wear a mask at all times

Inclement Weather

In the past, inclement weather days were required to be made up at the end of our school year. Virtual learning will now allow us to continue learning in the event of school closure due to dangerous weather conditions. In the event that a weather-related school closure can be predicted and planned in advance, transitioning to virtual learning for the day is a great option to help keep our families/buses safe and will prevent makeup days. Our school principals are planning logistics for such occasions.

Board Meeting Recap

Today, the OSD Board of Trustees voted to approve the Contract for Services for the Superintendent Search Services provided by the Mississippi School Board Association.
