Chargers Finish 2021 Season with State Runner Up Title

 
TUPELO, MS | The Oxford Chargers completed its 2021 campaign Friday, October 22 at the Tupelo Aquatic Center in MHSAA Class II Swimming Championship. Both the girls and boys teams repeated as top three team finishers seeing the Girls earn state runner-up and the boys place second runner-up. Madison Central won both sides. 

The Lady Chargers were led by All-American Julia Dennis - Louisville commit - as she broke the MHSAA state records in both the 50- and 100-yard Free events. In the 100 Free, her time of 49.49 broke the previous record of 50.86 held by Cassie Howell of Madison Central, ending her three-year undefeated streak. Dennis lowered her own state record in the 50, becoming the first female to ever break 23 seconds in an MHSAA event (22.92).
 
Additionally, the Oxford girls 200 Free Relay time of Mary Byars, Dennis, Cole Oyler and EK Schneider broke the MHSAA state record with a 1:39.84. It ended an eight-year run of MC in the event. 
 
"I am very proud of how our team competed in the meet," said Oxford coach Robert Gonzalez. "Our swimmers have worked hard for months and years and their results were conducive with their efforts. Our seniors can be proud of what they have meant to our program as swimmers and leaders as they continue to impact the younger ones who will have to replace them in the future."

Charles Byars led the Chargers men's program to a 3rd place team finish winning his two events. Byars set a PR and school record in his 100 Free (47.05) as he claimed the state title for the second straight year. He also won the 100 Back.
 
Other individual medalists for Oxford included Oyler with 2nd place finishes in the 50- and 200-Freestyle and Hannah Harper finishign 3rd overall in the 500 Free.
