Oxford’s Color Guard Program Digs Deeper
Oxford, Mississippi (May 9, 2024) — Members of the Oxford High School (OHS) color guard program led the way in designing and choreographing the award-winning seventh grade cadet winter guard show, “Dig a Little Deeper.” This special opportunity allowed the high school students to showcase their leadership and creativity.
While it was not required for high school members to participate, many did. They helped in numerous ways, including: writing routine, choreographing dance, and assisting with hair and makeup.
Larcen Foster, a member of OHS Varsity Winter Guard, explained that designing the 7th grade cadet show entailed much trial and error. However, mistakes were overcome. “Dig a Little Deeper” won first place at a regional competition and fifth place in their category at the Mississippi Indoor Association championships competition in Jackson, Mississippi.
Assistant Band Director and Color Guard Instructor Jessica Roebuck said, “[The judges] were very impressed that this age group was not only getting the opportunity to choreograph and design, but the level at which they were able to do that.”
The high school color guard volunteers gained valuable behind-the-scenes experience, including meeting with the judges directly. Through this, they learned what it entails to make a successful and compelling color guard show.
“It was a great experience, but I think what made it the best was the [7th grade] group we actually got to work with,” said Nathalie Pascacio, member of OHS Varsity Winter Guard.
