Fall Signing Day 2022: Eight OHS Athletes Sign Letters of Intent
Oxford, Mississippi (November 28, 2022) — Eight Charger athletes each officially committed to the school of their choice during National Signing Day ceremonies. Congratulations to these seniors for their hard work and dedication.
Track & Field
John Scott Kendricks – University of Arkansas
John Scott Kendricks signed a national letter of intent to Pole Vault for the Arkansas Razorbacks. Kendricks began his senior season with a career best of 16 feet, 9.5 inches (5.12), which won the 2022 Adidas Outdoor Nationals title. He produced an undefeated 2022 season as a junior at Oxford High School. His vault of 16-9.5 ranked 11th nationally among high school vaulters and he was the fifth-best junior for the year. In 2022, Kendricks won the Mississippi 6A State title with a 16-6.5 vault, which followed a then career best of 16-8 set in the MHSAA 1-6A Region meet.
Volleyball
Bree Lyons – Itawamba Community College
Bree Lyons signed her National Letter of Intent with Itawamba Community College. During her time with the Oxford Chargers Volleyball program, Bree recorded 1,003 kills, 995 digs, 35 blocks, and 198 aces. As a highlight to start her senior year, Bree was chosen to represent the North in the North vs. South All Star Volleyball, and was selected as Team Captain by her teammates. Bree has been on the All-Area teams for the Oxford Eagle and Daily Journal, and was selected for Third Team All-State in the 2021 season.
Torrey Tkach – The University of Southern Mississippi
Torrey Tkach signed with The University of Southern Mississippi as the first Oxford volleyball player in the program’s history to sign with a D-1 university on a full-ride scholarship. During her time with Oxford Chargers Volleyball, Torrey recorded 413 kills, 101 digs, 154 blocks, and 71 aces. Torrey was selected as team captain by her teammates going into her senior year. As a highlight to start Torrey's senior year, she was chosen to represent the North in the North vs. South All Star Volleyball.
Baseball
Vaiden Ellis – Meridian Community College
Vaiden Ellis signed with Meridian Community College after committing to play for the Eagles back in May. Ellis was a key contributor to Oxford’s run to the North Half Championship Series in the 2022 season last spring. The pitcher and first baseman has pitched 29 innings, has 36 strikeouts with a 143 opponent batting average, and was a 2nd Team All Division 1-6A Pitcher.
Campbell Smithwick – The University of Mississippi
Campbell Smithwick signed a letter of intent to play under Coach Mike Bianco on the Ole Miss Baseball team. The Oxford High School senior and 2022 Region 1-6A Player of the Year, was among a select group of high school baseball players across the country to be recruited by the MLB (Major League Baseball) and USA Baseball, to participate in the Prospect Development Pipeline League held at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina. The athlete was among the 20 players nationwide to be chosen to play on Team USA in the World Cup Qualifier in Mexico, where he was named All-Tournament Team (Best Catcher) and helped Team USA win the gold medal.
Soccer
Allie Greer – Northwest Community College
Allie Greer, a fullback for the Chargers’ soccer team, signed with Northwest Community College after a strong junior season. The 5-foot-5 defender has played in a variety of roles for Oxford over the course of her soccer career – spending time at left-back, center-back, holding midfielder, and forward.
Golf
Matthew Downing – University of Southern Mississippi
Matthew Downing has signed to play golf at the University of Southern Mississippi. He has been an important part of the Oxford High School Golf team since the 7th grade. While participating for the Charger golf team, Matthew has helped Oxford become one of the top teams in 6A classification. According to Junior Golf Scoreboard, Matthew is the #2 ranked Junior Golfer in Mississippi. He recently finished 2nd Place in the Randy Watkins Junior Championship, a No. 8 finish in the Mississippi Junior Amateur, and 26th overall in the Future Masters tournament.
Harlan Yearger – University of North Texas
Harlan Yearger has signed to play golf at the University of North Texas, located in Denton, TX. Harlan has been an important part of the Oxford golf team for 4 years. He has been successful not only at the high school level, but also on the Junior Golf tour as well. He won the 2021 Country Club of Oxford club championship, placed 2nd in the 2022 AJGA Huntsville Tournament, and 5th in the 2022 Mississippi Junior Amateur.
