Scholastic Institute Begins Second Cohort

Oxford, Mississippi (September 8, 2020) — Oxford High begins the second year of the Scholastic Institute in partnership with Northwest Community College – a rigorous program that allows students to simultaneously achieve their high school diploma while earning a fully accredited associate degree from Northwest Mississippi Community College (NWCC). Students take a combination of courses from college instructors and OHS dual credit instructors.

In its second year, OHS welcomes 16 juniors to the program bringing the total number of Oxford High students in the program to 28. This group of juniors represents an average GPA of 3.8 and an average ACT score of 21.

In the Scholastic Institute, students may choose pathways that include aerospace engineering, general college, medical lab sciences, math, secondary education, and human performance. Students are allowed to continue their participation in activities like choir, band, and athletics on the OHS campus.

Sophomore students are introduced to the Scholastic Institute and encouraged to enroll their Junior year. Students must have a minimum of a 17 in English and 19 in Math on the ACT to be eligible to enroll at NWCC as a Junior. Scholastic Institute students must enter the program in their junior year in order to participate in their senior year. Oxford High School considers applications based upon multiple factors including GPA, attendance, behavior, student applications, and budgetary limitations. Students can still apply even if their scores need improvement. There is no cost for a student to participate.

The Scholastic Institute is under the direction of the College and Career Readiness Department led by Dr. Steve Hurdle, Director of Career and Technical Education, and Dr. Duncan Gray, Assistant Director of Career and Technical Education. The department oversees and supports the Pathway Courses from 6-12 grade and works to align the academic and career guidance students receive as they move through the Oxford School District. In addition to the Scholastic Institute, the department oversees career-technical courses, dual enrollment, and the implementation of the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) National Model- a comprehensive approach to school counseling that improves student success.
