Oxford, Mississippi (January 15, 2020) — Five Oxford School District (OSD) students are advancing to the 2019-2020 Lafayette County Spelling Bee after winning first through fifth places at the Oxford School District Spelling Bee.
Twelve students in 5th grade through 8th grade from Oxford Intermediate School (OIS) and Oxford Middle School (OMS) competed for the top spelling bee spots during the district’s spelling bee held on Tuesday, January 15, 2020. These students are: Archer Adams, Caroline Morton, Harry Speaker, Meredith Walker, Avery Burkes, Jack Warrington, Martone Pegues, Avery Hyche, Will Grem, Conner Carlisle, Nicholas Nagle, Gates Allen. After twenty-four rounds and a bonus round to break a tie for fifth place, the winners were determined.
OSD Spelling Bee winners advancing to the 2016 Lafayette County Spelling Bee are:
1st Place: Gates Allen
2nd Place: Conner Carlisle
3rd Place: Meredith Walker
4th Place: Nicholas Nagle
5th Place: Avery Burkes
The Lafayette County Spelling Bee will feature the top spelling bee winners from Lafayette County Schools, Oxford and school districts with OSD hosting this year’s county spelling bee on Thursday, January 30, 2020.
The county spelling bee champion speller will advance to the Mississippi Spelling Bee in March.
