2018-2019 OSDF Grant Recipients

Oxford, Mississippi (March 26, 2019) — For over 30 years the Oxford School District Foundation (OSDF) has recognized outstanding teachers through the Teacher Innovation grant program. This year, twenty-seven teachers throughout the school district have been awarded a total of $65,655.23 from the Oxford School District Foundation. Funds generated from car tag sales, various fundraisers, and generous donors make these grants a reality.

OSDF’s goal is to expand learning opportunities for students beyond what is possible with existing school budgets, encouraging projects that take innovative, creative approaches to teaching curriculum. Examples of funded proposals include special software and equipment, innovative enhancements to science and music classrooms, hardback or perma-bound books, outdoor classrooms, and maps. A project can be funded only if there is no other money available with which it can be financed in a timely manner by the Oxford School District.

Each dollar of OSDF funds must be spent to generate maximum educational impact for students. OHS Biology Teacher and Robotics Team Coach, Amanda Smiley, was awarded a $1560 grant that was led solely by her students. Sydney Rester (12th grade), Cooper Crawley (11th grade), and a Trey Brower (9th grade) played a key role in determining what materials and funding were needed to build a "second ruckus robot."

Smiley stated "our robot is so small, it often limits the amount of student engagement at any given point. While ALL students can be involved in the design phase (sketching, modeling, and calculating the aspects of the layout), not all students can be actively building the robot at any given moment (due to size limitations and simple assembly/ disassembly constraints). I asked the students to come up with an idea that would allow for the most outreach for our group. We are trying to build a group dynamic that fully incorporates the science and engineering practices that are the foundation for our new MS science standards. I wrote the grant based on their goals and requests."

Grant recipients were recognized and awarded a certificate at the OSD Board of Trustees March meeting by OSDF President, Donna Strum.
