Oxford, Mississippi (October 30, 2018) — The Campaign for Grade-Level Reading “Council of Champions” honors exemplary volunteers, early care and education providers, school and civic leaders, and public officials for their demonstrated support for early literacy success. In 2018, 47 communities identified Champions. Two individuals of over 130 honorees were recognized for their exemplary service in Lafayette County-Oxford-University as members of the Council of Champions:

  • Brian Harvey, Oxford School District Superintendent
  • Mississippi Senator Gray Tollison

Community members gathered at the reception hosted by L.O.U. Reads on October 23 with special guest, State Superintendent of Education, Dr. Carey Wright. “Mississippi is making a difference in reaching grade-level reading goals. The nation is talking about us, not for being last, but for making progress in literacy by leaps and bounds. We are getting attention for the right reasons. Your work in the Oxford-Lafayette community is to be commended and the two champions being recognized tonight are leading the charge.” Wright stated. Also in attendance was Angela Rutherford, Director, Mississippi Campaign for Grade-Level Reading, a statewide effort to address major barriers to third-grade reading proficiency — school readiness, chronic absence, and summer learning loss — especially for low-income families.

In Spring of 2018, Tamara Hillmer was appointed as the Director of Early Childhood and Reading Development- the partnership between Oxford School District, Lafayette County School District, the City of Oxford, and Lafayette County to impact the reading success of all children in Lafayette County. L.O.U. Reads receives support throughout the year from local businesses and recognized Oby’s for the food and Oxford Floral for the flowers that were provided for the event.
