Oxford, Mississippi — In the Oxford School District, supporting students goes beyond the classroom. Through a partnership with Athletico Physical Therapy, Oxford School District provides athletic training services to support injury prevention, treatment, and recovery.

In this Q&A, learn more about our athletic trainer, Mr. Chance Ragsdale, and how the district’s newly expanded athletic facilities are enhancing care and overall student athlete wellness.

Can you describe your role as an athletic trainer for Oxford School District and what a typical day looks like?

My role as an athletic trainer for Oxford School District is centered on keeping our student athletes healthy, safe, and able to perform at their best.

Afternoons are usually spent covering practices, managing rehabilitation programs, and preparing for games. On game days, my focus shifts to emergency preparedness, injury prevention, and real-time decision-making on the sidelines. No two days are exactly the same, but every day is about supporting our athletes both physically and mentally.

How did your professional journey lead you to the Oxford School District?

My journey started at the collegiate and professional levels, working with the Tennessee Titans and later Ole Miss.

Mr. Chance Ragsdale

Those experiences taught me how to operate in high-pressure environments, collaborate with large medical teams, and manage athletes at the highest level of competition. I wanted to bring that same standard of care and professionalism to a setting where I could have a more direct, long-term impact. Oxford School District offered the opportunity to invest in athletes during their formative years and help student athletes when they are injured.

How do you work with coaches, parents, and medical professionals to support student health and safety?

Communication is key. I work closely with coaches to align on practice modifications and return-to-play plans that prioritize athlete safety. With parents, I aim to be transparent and informative, helping them understand injuries, recovery timelines, and next steps. I also coordinate with physicians, physical therapists, and other medical professionals to ensure continuity of care. Everyone involved shares the same goal: doing what’s best for the student-athlete.

What do you enjoy most about working with Oxford School District as an athletic trainer?

What I enjoy most is the community. Oxford School District truly values its student-athletes and invests in their well-being. There’s strong support from administration, coaches who care deeply about their players, and families who are engaged and appreciative. Being part of a district that prioritizes safety, growth, and excellence makes this role especially fulfilling.

Is there a moment from your time at Oxford School District that stands out as especially meaningful?

One of the most meaningful moments is seeing a student-athlete return from a significant injury and regain confidence, not just physically, but mentally. Watching them trust the process, overcome setbacks, and eventually step back onto the field ready to compete is incredibly rewarding. Those moments remind me why this work matters.

Oxford School District has recently expanded and updated its athletic facilities. How do these new spaces support your work and benefit student athletes?

The expanded and updated facilities have been a game-changer. Having dedicated, well-equipped athletic training space allows for more efficient evaluations, treatments, and rehabilitation sessions. The layout and accessibility improve athlete flow and privacy, and the upgraded equipment helps us deliver care that mirrors what athletes would receive at the collegiate or professional level.

How do the new and updated spaces improve overall student-athlete wellness?

These spaces support a more holistic approach to wellness. Athletes have access to areas designed for recovery, injury prevention, and education, not just performance. It reinforces the idea that taking care of your body is part of being an athlete. The environment itself communicates that health and safety are priorities.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

I’m grateful to be part of Oxford School District and proud of the trust placed in me by our athletes, families, and staff. My goal is always to provide the highest level of care while helping student-athletes develop habits that will benefit them long after their playing days are over. The lessons learned through injury, recovery, and teamwork often extend far beyond sports, and it’s an honor to be part of that journey.
