Bramlett Elementary School’s First-Grade Choir Rehearses for Its Inaugural Season

Oxford, Mississippi — A new sound is filling the halls of Bramlett Elementary School this year as 38 first-grade students make up the school’s inaugural first-grade choir.

Established by Bramlett music teacher Mr. Rickey Raine, the choir was created to give young students an opportunity to discover their voices, build confidence, and develop a love of music at an early age. Students auditioned before a panel of judges through short vocal performances and pitch-matching activities. Since then, they have been building foundational singing skills and learning how their individual voices come together as one choir.

We work on listening carefully to one another, following the director, singing as an ensemble, and learning how their individual voice contributes to the overall sound of the group, Mr. Raine said.

The Bramlett Choir is already preparing for an exciting first year of performances. On October 2, the first graders will perform the National Anthem at the Oxford High School football game against Madison Central. This fall, they will also take their music into the community, sharing their joy of singing with residents at a local nursing home and the State Veterans Home in honor of Veterans Day.

I hope that when these students look back years from now, they will remember being a part of the very first first-grade choir at Bramlett Elementary and know that they were part of something special, Mr. Raine said.

We are proud of the students in the Bramlett Elementary School Choir and grateful for Mr. Raine’s work to create new opportunities for young students. We look forward to seeing how this program continues to grow and strengthen music education across the Oxford School District!
