Commercial Driver’s License

In order to obtain your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) you must first pass a series of general knowledge and practical/driving exams. The driver’s manual is the book that provides the information you need to know in order to pass your tests and drive safely.

How to Earn a Commercial Driver's License

Step 1: Study & Obtain CDL Permit

Download the Commercial Driver's License Manual and study the Class B General Knowledge, Air Brakes, Passenger, and School Bus sections.

Visit the Mississippi Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to take the Class B permit tests.

Bring the required documents: regular driver's license, social security card, birth certificate, and proof of residency.

Your CDL permit is valid for six months. If necessary, you may apply for an extension to complete the required training.

Step 2: Apply for a Bus Driving Position

Visit the Oxford School District's vacancies website to apply for a bus driving position.

NOTE: Upon successful hire, the district will reimburse costs associated with becoming a driver, including CDL and drug screen.

Step 3: Complete Entry-Level Driver Training

You will undergo Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) and receive bus training mandated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). This comprehensive training program typically lasts between one to six weeks, depending on your availability and ability to absorb the material.

Step 4: Training Records Submitted

Upon completing ELDT, your classroom grades and training hours will be uploaded to the FMCSA's portal. These records will remain in the portal for 48 hours.

Step 5: Third-party Testing

Your supervisor will then schedule your Third-Party Testing, administered by the Mississippi Department of Education.

This evaluation consists of:

  • Classroom lecture
  • Pre-trip inspection test
  • Range maneuvers test
  • Behind-the-wheel road test

The testing process lasts approximately five hours.

Step 6: You are ready to drive a bus!

Upon successfully passing all required tests, you will be awarded your Commercial Driver's License.
