Returning to School After Illness

Students with thick white, yellow, or green discharge from either eye will be sent home and should receive medication for a minimum of 24 hours, be symptom free, or have a physician's statement that they are not contagious before returning to school.

Students may return to school after being symptom free without medication for 24 hours.

Students who have a temperature of 100.4°F (38°C)or higher will be sent home and may return to school after being fever free without medication for 24 hours.

Before returning to school, students must be fever free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medications and improving symptoms, OR per physician’s orders.

Students with head lice or nits may return to school after treatment and after all live bugs are gone. The school nurse will check for lice prior to returning to class. Proof of treatment is required.

The student may return to school 24 hours after beginning treatment. Lesions that are still oozing and are on exposed skin surfaces should be covered.

Students may return to class 24 hours after beginning treatment if free of fever for at least 24 hours.

Students may return to school after vomiting has stopped for 24 hours AND tolerating solid food and fluids.

If diagnosed with Norovirus, students should remain home for 48 hours after vomiting has stopped.

Students who are recovering from an illness and are fever free, but too ill/tired/weak to actively participate in classroom activities, should remain home. Likewise, excessive coughing and sneezing that distracts from or prevents learning, may also be a reason for students to remain at home.

For illnesses which require an antibiotic, the child should have taken the medication for 24 hours before returning to school.
