Dual Enrollment & Dual Credits
Dual credit courses give students the opportunity to earn high school and college credit at the same time. Through courses offered by Oxford High School and local colleges or universities, students can meet high school graduation requirements while also beginning to earn college credit. For example, a student who takes English Composition I1 may receive three hours of college credit while also earning high school credit for English IV4. Several dual credit course options are available, including some online courses that may offer flexible pacing.
Introduction
What is the difference between dual enrollment and dual credit?
Dual enrollment means a student is enrolled in two separate, academically related institutions at the same time, such as Oxford High School and a college or university.
Dual credit means a student takes a college-level course that also counts for high school credit. Upon successful completion, the course may earn credit from both the college or university and Oxford High School. Dual credit courses are included in a student’s high school GPA.
Who should be interested?
Dual credit may be a good option for students who want to begin earning college credit while still in high school. It may also benefit families who are interested in reducing future college costs by earning college credit before high school graduation.
Who is eligible?
To enroll in a dual credit course through Northwest Mississippi Community College or the University of Mississippi, students must meet eligibility requirements. These requirements may include a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, successful completion of required high school coursework, junior standing, and/or a written recommendation from the school principal or counselor. Some courses may also require a qualifying ACT sub-score.

About Dual-credit Courses
Dual-credit courses allow Oxford High School students to simultaneously earn college credit that also counts as credit towards a high school diploma. All dual-credit courses are taught by OHS teachers and credit is earned through Northwest Community College or Blue Mountain Christian University. Any dual-credit course will transfer to any Mississippi 2- or 4-year post-secondary institution, and many will transfer to institutions outside of Mississippi.
American History 1
This course is a survey of American history from pre-history through the Civil War era. Topics include the migrations to the Americas, the colonial and revolutionary periods, the development of the Republic, and the Civil War. Upon completion, students should be able to analyze significant political, socioeconomic, and cultural developments in early American history.
American History 2
College Algebra
This course includes inequalities; functions; linear and quadratic equations, circles, and their graphs; rational, radical, and higher-order equations; applications; polynomial and rational functions; logarithmic and exponential functions; systems of equations. Prerequisite: Two years of high school algebra (Algebra 1, 2) and ACT math sub-score of at least 19, or MAT 1233 with grade of C or higher, or two years of high school algebra and demonstrated proficiency on a placement test.
Trigonometry
This course includes trigonometric functions and their graphs; trigonometric identities; trigonometric equations; radian measurement; solutions of right and oblique triangles; inverse trigonometric functions; applications. Prerequisite: Math 1313 with a grade of C or higher or ACT math sub-score of 20 or higher.
English Composition 1
A general introduction to the principles of writing with emphasis on writing process, thesis, context, purpose, and audience. This course will provide college-level instruction and practice in the characteristics of effective writing, rhetorical knowledge, analysis of texts, writing conventions, flexible writing processes, critical thinking skills, and writing in multiple genres. Prerequisite: ACT English sub-score of 17.
English Composition 2
This course will build upon English Composition 1, but will foster student development of an effective research process that includes utilizing available electronic, digital, and print technologies to locate sources, evaluating sources for credibility and usefulness, effectively integrating a range of sources to appropriately support an academic argument, and adhering to documentation and citation conventions (with emphasis on MLA and/or APA style). Prerequisite: ACT English sub-score of 17.
Principles of Biology 1 and Lab
This is a lecture course for non-science majors that provides an introduction to the basic principles of modern biology and their relevance to modern life. An emphasis is placed on the nature and history of scientific thought, basic biological chemistry, cell structure and processes, and genetics. The lab contains experiments and exercises that reinforce the principles introduced in Principles of Biology 1.
Principles of Biology 2 and Lab
This is a lecture course for non-science majors that emphasizes the survey of the diversity of life, ecology, evolution, and an overview of organ systems. Principles of Biology 1 is a prerequisite for the course. The lab contains experiments and exercises that reinforce the principles introduced in Principles of Biology 2.
Music Appreciation
Emphasis is on learning to listen to music and on the role it plays within the wider contexts of history and society. Listening materials are drawn from a variety of sources: classical music, non Western music, American popular music (particularly jazz, country, and rock), and the American folk tradition.

Oxford High School Dual Credit Billing and Invoicing Procedures
We are implementing a flat-rate tuition and billing procedure for regular Dual Credit courses at Oxford High School through Northwest Community College. Students will be charged on their PowerSchool account based on the following information.
Tuition
Tuition is $200 per course.

Financial Assistance
Financial assistance for dual credit courses is based solely on a student’s free or reduced lunch status. Students who qualify for free or reduced lunch may be eligible for assistance with dual credit course fees. Families who believe they may qualify should ensure their free or reduced lunch application is completed and up to date.
Transferring College Credit
Transferring College Credit
Courses completed through Northwest Mississippi Community College are accepted by Mississippi public colleges and universities. Many private colleges in Mississippi and out-of-state institutions may also accept Northwest courses and apply them toward a student’s degree.
It is important to understand that transfer credit decisions can vary by college, university, major, and degree program. A course may transfer to one institution differently than it does to another, so students and families should research transfer requirements for each college or university they are considering.
Most colleges and universities provide an online transfer equivalency tool that allows students to see how credits may transfer. Searching the college or university name along with “transfer credit equivalency” will usually lead to the correct tool.
