What is AVID?

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a college-readiness program designed to prepare students for admission to four-year colleges and universities and to prepare them for a global society. AVID students demonstrate individual determination via:

• learning with tutors,
• writing for all classes,
• developing and practicing success strategies,
• applying for scholarships,
• investigating and preparing for careers,
• visiting college campuses,
• interacting with guest speakers, and
• participating in extracurricular, community service, and leadership activities

A well-developed AVID program improves school-wide standardized test scores, rigorous course enrollments, and the number of students attending college. It has a proven track record in bringing out the best in students, and in closing the achievement gap. AVID is at work in nearly 4,900 schools in 46 states as well as the District of Columbia and 16 countries/territories. Large urban schools, tiny rural schools, resource-rich suburban schools, and struggling schools — they all find that AVID meets the needs of their students in the middle.

• To provide academic instruction and other support for students and to prepare them for eligibility to four-year colleges and universities
• To give students college-level entry skills
• To increase the coping skills of program participants
• To motivate and support students to seek a college education
• To increase the participants’ level of career awareness
