Directors of the Oxford Band Program
Mel Morse earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music education from the University of Mississippi. During his time at Ole Miss, he served as drum major of the Pride of the South Marching Band for three years. Prior to his current position as Director of Bands at Oxford HS, Mr. Morse was the Director of Bands at Lewisburg HS in Olive Branch, Mississippi. Under his direction over the last six years, the Lewisburg High School (LHS) Marching band has finished no lower than second place including three State Championships.
In 2002 Mr. Morse was the recipient of the A.E. McClain award, given to the most outstanding young band director in the state of Mississippi. The LHS Concert band has received all superiors in concert and sight reading, bringing them the distinction of Sweepstakes winners.
Mr. Morse is a member of Phi Beta Mu, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Mississippi Bandmasters Association, and is past President of both the Northeast MS and the I-55 Band Director’s Associations. He has also directed the World-Champion Mississippi All-State Lion’s Band. While not busy spending time with his wife, Lewanda, and daughters, Emily (10) and Allie (8), he is an active adjudicator and clinician throughout the state.
Marsha Morgan is currently in her eleventh year of teaching. She graduated from Calhoun City High School in 1998, completed her Bachelor of Music Education Degree from the University of Mississippi in 2002 and received her Master of Music in 2005 from the same institution. While attending Ole Miss, Mrs. Morgan participated in Wind Ensemble, Marching Band, Color Guard, Basketball Band, Symphonic Band, and the Collegians Jazz Band and was a graduate assistant for a year.
Morgan was a member of Tau Beta Sigma and Sigma Alpha Iota. She is currently a member of the Mississippi Bandmasters Association, the I-55 Band Directors Association, and the Northeast Mississippi Junior High Band Directors Association.
Mrs. Morgan's husband, Keith, is the band director at Water Valley High School in Water Valley, Mississippi. They are the proud parents of Lora Brooke and Britt Douglas.
Jared Brownlee is in his fourth year as Assistant Band Director and percussion instructor at Oxford High School and his 20th year as an educator in the state of Mississippi. Mr. Brownlee graduated from Senatobia High School in 1987, and attended Northwest Community College in Senatobia, MS for two years. Mr. Brownlee participated in the Marching Band, arranged for the drum line and also participated in the Basketball Band, Symphonic Band, percussion ensemble and the Jazz Band at NWCC. Mr. Brownlee transferred to Delta State University in Cleveland, MS where he completed his Bachelor of Music Education Degree in 1992. While at Delta State Mr. Brownlee was drum captain, a percussionist in the University Wind Ensemble and arranged for the drum line of the Delta State marching band. Mr. Brownlee also attended the University of Mississippi where he received his Master of Music Education in 1997. While attending Ole Miss, Mr. Brownlee participated in Wind Ensemble, Marching Band, Basketball Band, and was a graduate assistant for a year.
Brownlee currently is a member of the college band directors national association (CBDNA), Mississippi Bandmasters Association (MBA), the I-55 Band Directors Association, the Northeast Mississippi Percussion Association and the Percussive Arts Society (PAS).
Mr. Brownlee taught at Saltillo High school and Guntown middle school as director of bands for 3 years and also taught at Southaven high school as assistant director of bands. Brownlee also served as the Desoto Band directors association president in 1997.
Most recently Mr. Brownlee was the percussion instructor, percussion ensemble director, concert band director and music instructor at East Central Community College in Decatur, MS for 12 years and has served as the Mississippi community and junior colleges band director association president (MCJCBDA). Mr. Brownlee has also been a percussionist with the Meridian Symphony orchestra and the Tupelo Symphony.
Mr. Brownlee’s bands have received superior and excellent ratings over the years and his percussion sections have captured several 1st place awards and caption awards at various contests. He has served as an adjudicator, percussion consultant and percussion arranger throughout the state of Mississippi.
Mr. Brownlee’s wife, Roseanne, is currently a teacher at Della Davidson elementary in Oxford, Mississippi. They are the proud parents 5 children, Jordan, Caleb, Caroline, Addison and Olivia.
